A Trip To The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

November 26, 2011

This past summer my family from Germany came to visit. My cousin came to stay with us for a week. She’s studying to become a teacher and one of her majors is Biology. She loves nature and everything it has to offer. Just like me!!! 🙂

One day we decided to take a drive down the road to the nature preserve. I had never been there even though we lived basically right next to it for almost 10 years. Isn’t it amazing how we just don’t think of it and only look up and pay attention when we are made to?

We had a wonderful time that day – walking along the shaded boardwalk through the Cypress woods, trekking through the marsh ( I was a little freaked out being so close to the alligators that call the canals home.), going up on one of the look-out towers and seeing the Everglades stretched out for what seemed like miles, and standing on one of the docks watching people fish and an alligator circling around looking for lunch.

So, here are some of the images we captured that day… I hope, you enjoy!!!

Middle Daughter

November 22, 2011

She’s beautiful, she’s mine and she wants me to write about her. Middle daughter feels that I’ve written too much about her little sister and big brother and she wanted a post all her own…so typical. She loves attention and we always say one day she’ll bring home an Oscar!!! So, my darling, here it is…your own post.

Where do I start? … She’s our red-headed, blue-eyed, freckles across her nose little bundle of energy. She never holds still…she skips, dances, runs, or cart-wheels everywhere… even in the store which drives me crazy :)!!! She’s as Twilight obsessed as her mommy, loves music and playing instruments just like her daddy and is just the sweetest. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t adore her. She’s compassionate, helps others ( she regularly walks our 85-year-old neighbor’s dog), and gives the best monkey hugs. She also loves to talk, and talk, and talk…that’s obviously a trait that I handed down to her. My mom says we are the only two people she knows who can have an entire conversation without once taking in a breath of air! She’s a great big sister and often takes care of our youngest. She drives her big brother crazy but still loves him dearly. He doesn’t appreciate the hugs she gives him ( in public )…not cool in front of all your friends!!! She’s also a budding fashionista and her daddy’s personal shopper…she’s picked out many amazing outfits on their shopping trips and I really don’t get much of a say anymore. She’s also a bit of a slob and her room is forever messy no matter how often we organize it or I yell at her…it’s in her genes and that one comes from daddy!!!

I could go on and on…but instead I will leave you with some pictures of our pretty little angel. I love her with all my heart and I hope that she will continue to grow and thrive and always stay true to herself!!!

Okay, I think, I’ll stop now…I have a million pictures of her…did I mention that she loves to pose and have her picture taken??? Well, she is cute, isn’t she…so who can blame her for wanting to pose and me for always taking her picture?

Rainbows

November 21, 2011

This morning on the way to school my son points out the car window and says: “Look mom; a rainbow.” And sure enough, to the west there was a beautiful rainbow. We could almost see the whole arch going across the sky.

As I marveled at the beauty of it, my know-it-all ten-year old turns around and proceeds to tell me and middle daughter about the science behind the phenomenon. He explained, how drops of rainwater can refract and disperse light basically like a prism. If conditions are right, like they were this morning, then this refraction can cause a rainbow. (For more scientific explanation, click here.)

I just kind of stared at him, as I so often do when he has his “Professor K.” hat on — that’s what one of his teachers nicknamed him for knowing and retaining so many random facts!!!

I know there is a reason for why rainbows form but I honestly don’t care. I just love seeing them. They put a smile on my face and make me feel good inside. I always look at them as a positive sign and usually when I see one, I think to myself that today will be a good day.

Do you like rainbows or maybe one of nature’s other phenomenons?

My new hero…the appliance repair man!

November 17, 2011

A nightmare scenario for any housewife unfolded yesterday in our home. Okay, so maybe that’s a little melodramatic! In the middle of a wash cycle, my washing machine decides to give in and throw an error message. Not too worried, I looked in the manual to find out how to fix it…and got stumped. None of the things the manual suggested worked. After I gave up, hubby took a crack at it, he’s usually able to fix minor and sometimes even major issues. But alas, he couldn’t figure out what the issue was and only managed to flood my laundry room. At least,he tried, right?

First thing this morning, I called our trusty repair man, he was here about a year ago and worked wonders with our dryer, saving us a bunch of money. He showed up when he said he would, always a good sign in my eyes. After I explained what happened yesterday, he took a look and started taking the machine apart, very scary in my mind.

Here’s what it looked like.

Pretty scary, right? He had to go and pick up the part that was broken, the drain pump, apparently. It was full of water (so much for seals)and the drain pipe was completely clogged with sand. I guess, I need to do a better job of shaking out the sand after we get home from the beach. Anyways, he left the whole mess the way it was and took off to places unknown. The only reason, I didn’t freak out about the pieces of machinery lying all over the laundry room and parts of the living room, was because he left all his tools behind. I figured, he’d want to come back for those…he’s a repair man after all and those are the tools of his trade, so to speak.

After about an hour, the good man was back with a new pump, ready to be installed and my machine put back together. I admit, I did have my doubts that he could do it. There were just so many parts. Before, I knew it my machine was back to its former glory and smoothly humming away. Sigh. Thank you appliance repair man for being there in my time of need.

Here it is, put back together, the way it should be.

I know, I have a bit of a problem with my love of household appliances. Hubby always jokes about how excited I get when I get a new “toy”. He doesn’t seem to understand, how all those “toys” make my life run more efficient and smoother, and his dirty clothes cleaner and brighter!!!

Do you have an obsession with household appliances or tools?
