Little Miss Independent — not right now

November 15, 2011

Little sis and her family are back in Germany. The time went by way to fast…but possibly, not fast enough for my youngest. She’s just turned three and is fiercely independent, she doesn’t really like help with anything she can manage on her own.”I can do it myself”, is a mantra we hear often enough in this house.  We often shake our heads and wonder where this “alien” child ( three going on thirty) has come from. But while my sister was here with my 6 months old niece, my youngest went from independent to clingy.

First off, she gave the term jealous new meaning. She got cranky, didn’t want anyone’s help but mommy’s ( especially not her aunt’s or uncle’s). It got down-right embarrassing. She’s always been a little diva but she was never obnoxious to the point of rudeness before.

After, a couple of days things calmed down a bit and she seemed to adjust to having an infant around that mommy liked to hold ( a lot). But then, instead of being a jealous little monster, she turned into a needy little munchkin. She wants me to carry her like a baby and rock her and sing to her while rocking her…it is certainly not the norm with her, but I am strangely enjoying this interlude. I know, it will be short-lived. So, while she wants to be held a little extra and cuddle and tell me in her sweet little voice that ” I love you soooo much, mommy”, I will enjoy.

Before long, I will hear those dreaded words-“I can do it myself, mommy”-again. All three of my “babies” are growing up way too fast and I treasure every moment that they want to give me a hug or kiss, just because. Or,tell me “You are the best mommy, ever”. Who doesn’t like to hear that? It certainly makes me feel all fuzzy and warm inside.

from this…smiley and happy

November 13, 2011

This is middle daughter’s “Glamorous Turkey”, a project she had to do for school. My sister and her worked on it together and I thought, since it came out so nice, I’d share it here.

November 10, 2011

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.

Temper Temper

November 8, 2011

I really don’t mean to lose my temper. I don’t like it when the crazy woman comes out. But can I help it when my three monsters, I mean angels, do everything in their power to make it happen? It tends to happen more often when daddy is out of the house and they think they can get away with murder. Like tonight, it’s his usual Tuesday Trivia Night.

I was still busy cleaning up the kitchen after dinner and asked my older two to help their little sister get in the tub and supervise. Little Miss Attitude decides to be difficult and ignore their repeated requests to get in the tub. So, as I’m cleaning dishes and straighten up I can hear them try to coax her into the tub, with little sing-song voices.- ” Come on, let’s get in the tub. Who is a good little girl?” – And coax her, and coax her, and coax her some more…Mind you, the whole time I’m listening, I never heard them start the water, or put out her bath toys.

Meanwhile, I’m downstairs and  I can start the blood begin to boil and my eyes to glaze over in a haze of red…crazy woman is about to come out. But I try to resist, take a few calming breath and continue to clean. ” I’ll give them a couple more minutes ” , I think to myself as I wipe down the table ( which is strangely soothing). But mere seconds later I can’t take it anymore…one more “Come on, let’s get in the tub ” and she’s out, crazy woman, that is. She even scares me sometimes! ( The color I get in my face usually matches my hair…and that’s red more often than not.)

So, I race up the stairs with my hair standing on end and ask in my best “mommy is mad” voice what is going on and why isn’t youngest daughter in the tub, yet? I admit it, I am a yeller. The sight that greets me leaves me at a loss for words. My oldest is standing against the wall with one of his Nerf guns slung over his shoulder like he’s on patrol, middle daughter is leaning against the counter admiring herself in the mirror ( as she so often does – she is very cute! ) and youngest daughter is still fully clothed sitting on the closed toilet. I could not see any bath taking place.

Ok, so now I’ve had it…I send the older two to their rooms to think about what made mommy mad and how they can best worm their way back into my good graces. I get the bath going, after yanking the curtain open with a little more force than necessary, it had it coming after all and proceeded to give my little diva her bath. While shampooing her hair and talking to her it occurred to me that my little monsters were smart indeed. Didn’t they accomplish just what they wanted?

By wasting time and lollygagging and doing it at the top of their lungs, so I was sure to hear it, they got out of the dreaded chore of giving their little sister a bath and back to the things that they wanted to do.  So what if mommy gets a little mad? In the big scheme of things it just doesn’t matter.

When was your last “aha” moment regarding your kids or even your pets? ( They are sneaky just the same !!!)

Case Status Update

November 7, 2011

“Your case status has been updated.” That’s the text I got tonight.  I stopped in the middle of getting lunch ready for my boy and ran to the computer. I couldn’t wait for my e-mail account to load to see if the follow-up e-mail was in my inbox ( fingers impatiently drumming on the table!!!)…and there it was. I clicked on the link and there it was, the update. I am now officially scheduled for my citizenship interview and test and should receive a letter by snail mail informing me of the date and time. I cannot wait to find out. This is happening so freakishly fast.

Just a month ago I sent out my application for citizenship, within two weeks I had an appointment for fingerprinting (I went last Tuesday.) and by Thursday I had an update that my background check was complete and I was in line for scheduling. And today the notice that I am scheduled to appear for my interview and test. Wow, for once bureaucracy is putting its best foot forward. The wonders of modern technology are certainly making themselves known here. ( Fingerprinting is now done digitally with special fingerprinting machines/computers…no more cards that need to be sent off.)

I better get cracking and start to study, as hubby suggested after I told him the news. I do have a nifty study guide provided by  USCIS ( United States Citizen and Immigration Services) that will come in handy. It is actually very informative. Out of 100 question I have to study, I will be asked 10 and I have to get 6 of those right. There will also be a vocab and English portion – I’m pretty sure my English will pass!!!!! 🙂

So, while I impatiently wait for that letter to arrive in the mail, I will be a good girl and start studying. It’s better to be prepared, right?

As soon as I find it in the mailbox, I will let you know the when and where. Oh boy, I am so excited. It seems that I will be an American citizen sooner than anticipated. What a wonderful way to finish off this year!!!! Wish me luck.

Wide Open Spaces

November 6, 2011

In order to travel from the east coast of Florida to the west coast ( and back, again) you need to drive through the Florida Everglades. No matter how often I make the trip ( to visit my mom) and no matter which way we choose to go, I am always amazed at the vastness of the Everglades…the wide open spaces between the two coast lines. Some of it is farm land, some the marshes and some the swamp…

I took some pictures with my phone’s camera this weekend and they really don’t do it justice…but I thought I’d share and next time I will remember my camera and maybe make a pit stop or two to really capture the beauty of it all.

Sunset, somewhere on SR 80 in Florida!

Farm land, somewhere on SR 80 in Florida!

Alligator Alley ( I-75), in the middle of the Florida Everglades!

It goes on like this forever and ever. All you see is space and sometimes an alligator or two!!! 🙂 I love it and never tire of it. I truly have come to love and appreciate all that Florida’s environment has to offer. I think, it’s amazing…

Do you enjoy the scenery and nature’s bounty where you live?
