Quote of the week!

December 15, 2011

“Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

~Ronald Reagan, June 1987 near the Berlin Wall

(one of the reasons I’m able to be here, in this country)

    The full quote;

    We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

      Really? I don’t really remember it at all… I was too young for one and still behind the wall!

    That’s pretty neat, but how come I don’t remember any of it?!

      Liz, I don’t really remember it either but it did have a profound effect on my life as you can see… I read up on it much later and thanks to my “know-it-all” hubby I’m well informed now!!! 🙂

    One of the greatest moments in recent history for sure!

      Yup. And I was right in the thick of it so to speak… not that I had a clue. I was way too young to care.

    We saw him a couple years ago in Louisville holding a speech on the world economy. It was amazing!
    He ended his presentation with a Russian poem about peace. “MIR!”
    It brought tears to my eyes.
    He made it possible for us to be here! Cpaciba 🙂
