Monday Listicles {Tropical Storm Isaac Edition}

August 27, 2012

My Monday Listicles post is totally off topic today. Please, forgive me…

It’s just that there are other things on my mind.

As some of you know I live in mostly sunny South Florida!

It’s usually sunny, except when it’s not.

You know, every once in a while when certain weather conditions like to remind us that it’s not all fun  and games in Florida.

So, this is what we’ve been dealing with the past few days.

Tropical Storm Isaac!

The original forecast called for the feeder bands to start coming in sometime on Sunday afternoon, with the worst of it overnight into dawn Monday and then start subsiding by midday Monday.

Then they changed the forecast saying it should start easing up by Sunday evening and basically be done with it.

Well, turns out the original forecast was right and we got “hammered”(that was actually a news headline) overnight into this morning. It did not let up by midmorning but lasted well into the afternoon.

As I’m writing this it’s still very gloomy and drizzles on and off.

Here is my list of just 10 pictures to show you what my neighborhood looks like right now.

1) This is currently the look of our pool. Hubby posted a status on Facebook: “We finally have the infinity pool we always wanted.”🙂 I haven’t been able to take a picture of our flooded backyard… it’s our very own pond!!!

2) This is the view from my garage. Pretty accurate for what the sky has been like the past few days. I miss the sun.

3) The intersection at the end of my street. I walked Macy our dog and waded through water more than ankle deep. I’ve never seen it flooded this way here.

4) “Our” fishing lake. The street is completely flooded and the lakes on both sides are actually meeting. I did see a few stuck cars.

5) A different view from the same lake. The trees are usually on a nice patch of grass.

6) My girls feet. Some areas are deeper than others. I kept them well away from the deeper ones.

7) Going towards another one of the lakes and our favorite big, shady tree which is up to its trunk underwater as well.

8) Can’t believe they sent out the mail carrier today. Felt bad for him. Not exactly safe driving conditions.

9) Middle and Little One were worried for the baby ducks. They all made it and are safe. These are just two of them… the others ran off when they saw me coming with my big camera.

10) One of my favorite pics (looking on the bright side)… the girls’ floating flip flops!!!

All in all it could have been a lot worse. It was more of a rain then a wind event and we never lost power. Which actually surprised me quite a bit. I’ve never seen the neighborhood flooded like this. We are sticking close to home until the water has receded some and it’s safe to be on the roads again.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the people in the Gulf states, especially Louisiana (New Orleans) now and hope everyone stays safe!

Picture Perfect Sundays #18

August 25, 2012

I love to share photos and I love Instagram. I was one happy little blogger when Instagram became available on Android devices. I jumped, no leaped, on that particular social media bandwagon and have developed a new love affair/addiction with it. Because of this love affair I have decided to start my very own Sunday link up called… Picture Perfect Sundays!!!
I would love it if you would join me and share the treasures you captured with Instagram/phone camera/any other camera during the past week. I see a lot of fantastic, cute, funny and happy moments every day.

Share just one or many of your pictures and add a small description.

Just paste the badge into your post or sidebar and follow me… quick and simple. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and of course, Instagram!

This week I didn’t take too many pictures but still have a few to share.

Today I spent most of the day prepping for the arrival of Tropical Storm Isaac.

Hubby and I cleaned the pool area and put everything inside. The pool deck is mostly empty and the garage filled to the hilt.

I went to the store and battled the crowds to get some non-perishable food and extra water in case we lose power.

I also did more laundry than I ever thought possible in a day… I managed to do 5 loads and everything is already folded and put away.

I may have gone overboard but even if we don’t lose power and it turns out not to be a big deal I’ll have a day to relax and only a small pile of laundry for a change!!! 🙂

The kids school will be closed on Monday — it would have been their first day of school — guess it’ll be on Tuesday now.

Okay then, here are a few of my Instagram shots from the last week.

Middle and the boy waiting out a rain storm by his locker during open house on Friday.

I couldn’t believe how happy they were to see their friends and go back to school.

Makes me happy! 🙂

Middle giving me a pedicure by the pool . A beautiful day with lots of sun…

The boy’s first golf practice. He had a good time and did well.

His thumbs not so much, he walked away with two huge blisters.

Didn’t stop him from going again two days later.

So proud.

Little One on her sister’s laptop.

Concentrating so hard.

She amazes me by how much she already knows.

Homemade chicken soup for my poor hubby who was laid up on the couch most of the week.

He”s doing much better…

Sisters getting along and hanging out with Joey watching over them.

He’s my neighbor’s dog and such a sweetheart.

The girls love him.

Now it’s your turn. Hope you all had a wonderful week. Can’t see your pics!!!

A busy week and fill in fun

August 23, 2012

It seems this week I went from one appointment to the next.

Middle had an eye check up, the boy started golf practice and Middle dance camp.

I went driving back and forth to school, the golf course and home.

Sometimes all in one day.

Today was a doozy…

Middle had to be at school for dance camp, then we had some time (the boy got a new pair of shoes and so did this mommy) and the boy had to go to practice, from there we went back to school to pick her up, drove home, grabbed a bite to eat.

Then the boy and I headed out again back to school for middle school orientation and finally got home at 8pm.

On top of it all my poor hubby has been on the couch sick for two days.

It’s been fun.

Tomorrow promises to be another busy day with open house for both Middle and the boy, at separate times.

After this week I kinda look forward to the routine of the school year.

Seems we’ll be spared major troubles from the hurricane that’s heading in our direction and should only have to deal with some rain.

Now, time to fill in some blanks.

Each week, Hilary plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on your own blogs. Picture Perfect Sundays #17

I look forward to seeing your treasured moments!!!

It’s late and I’m tired. Little One came in three times during last night which is unusual for her. I sure felt it today and I’m ready to hit the sheets.

But not before I share my Instagram shots from the past week!!!

Here they are:

From top clockwise:

1) Evening sky after one of our daily thunderstorms as seen on our walk. Never get tired of it.

2) Kids being silly for photoadayaugust on Instagram.

3) Middle with her brothers aviators looking cool.

4) Finn our attack kitty trying to get me.

5) We had a visitor in our pool one morning this week. It was a harmless Southern Ringneck snake (yes, I researched it right away) and hubby saved it from a drowning death and put it out back. I still haven’t been back in the pool… because of the thunderstorms, not the snake!!! 🙂

6) Gracie our Yorkie making herself comfortable on Little One’s new beanbag chair.

7) I made chocolate chip cookies at 9 pm last night because my boy had a chocolate graving… and maybe I did too.

8) Little One enjoying her new bean bag chair.

9) Little One at dinner tonight enjoying daddy’s dinner more than her own. That’s a pork shank… or as we would call it in Germany, Schweinehaxe… Every once in a while it’s nice to go to a restaurant and eat German food and not cook it at home.

10) My girls looking pretty on the way to dinner.

11) All three of my offspring on our evening walk with the pooches. It doesn’t happen too often so I had to take a picture to commemorate the occasion.

Share Your Recipe Thursdays… {Frosted Orange Glaze Cookies}

August 15, 2012

This recipe came from the back of a flour bag.

I love anything citrus flavored and after trying out these yummy cookies with a lemon glaze from Katie at Sluiter Nation.

I figured, why not give the orange glaze ones a try.

The citrus flavor is so light and summery to me – perfect for these hot, humid days we’ve been having.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter, softened

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

2 teaspoons orange extract

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°.

Beat butter and sugar, in a large bowl, with an electric mixer on high speed until creamy.

Add egg and orange extract, mixing well.

Gradually add the flour, mixing well.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls .

Place 2-inches apart on a greased baking sheet.

Dip a flat-bottomed glass into sugar and flatten balls.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges of the cookies are lightly browned.

Cool cookies completely before adding frosting.

Frosting:

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 1/4 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon grated orange peel

1 teaspoon orange extract

1-2 tablespoons milk

Mix all ingredients well until spreading consistency. Spread on cookies. Let dry.

Enjoy!!!
