A big surprise and some fill ins…

November 30, 2012

The cat’s out of the bag.

The surprise complete.

And as I write this, hubby and Middle are on an airplane headed to the Big Apple.

Middle loves hearing hubby tell stories of his hometown, of growing up in New York and of our trip there when she was only about 2 and too young to remember anything.

When she came home with her first quarter report card of all A’s and B’s and a glowing report at the parent teacher conference hubby decided to surprise her with a weekend getaway to NY.

He always takes the kids out by themselves for a little daddy time throughout the year. The boy seemed to have gotten most of that this year. They had a few father-son weekends doing fun stuff together.

Of course, all this was planned before Hurricane Sandy happened and for a while we weren’t sure if he should take her. After talking it over, he decided to go for it.

We told her yesterday. She was shaking with excitement.

I’m excited just thinking about it. About all the things she’ll get to experience…

The Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, skating at Wollman Rink in Central Park (if she can handle the cold), the top of the Empire State building, the Museum of Natural History… and the list goes on.

They’ll be cramming a lot into the time they are there.

One of the things I’m happy about is that I get to send my ray of sunshine to our friend Hilary.

Yes, Hilary of Feeling Beachie

I told Middle that her mission is to give Hilary the greatest, biggest hug she could from me.

I know, I’ll be getting a report back! 🙂

Hilary, I know you’ll be reading this. I just want to say “Thank You!” for opening your home to hubby and Middle. I know, it’s not the best time right now. Just know, that this is something Middle will never forget… and I will always be one very grateful mommy!

Each week, Hilary plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on our own blogs. If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her at feelingbeachie@gmail.com. If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop! This week’s co-host is Jessica from Black White and a little bit of pink – she came up with the last two statements!

Hilary would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

This week’s statements:
1. I have always dreamed of ____
2. My ___ is my ____
3. I love to ____ when I ____
4. I will never forget ____ with ____

My answers:

1. I have always dreamed of having a house custom built, preferably on a lake. (Not so sure I want to be on the water anymore though.)

2. My OCD tendency when it comes to prepping for a party or company is my biggest downfall because I stress myself and the rest of the family out for no reason.

3. I love to sip a cup of Rooibus tea with honey when I settle down at night.

4. I will never forget seeing hubby with our firstborn. It just did something to my heart the first time I saw him hold our boy. The child that made us parents.

Tasty Thursday {Chocolate Cutout Cupcakes}

November 29, 2012

I’ve told you about my love for baking before. I love the process. The measuring, mixing, stirring. And of course, tasting the delicious treats when they are done.

It seems, my girls inherited my love for baking. They won’t let me do any of it on my own anymore. As soon as they hear the clatter of bowls and whisks, they come running.

And wouldn’t you know, at Middle’s book fair at school recently, Little One found this cookbook and would not leave without it. It is chock full of recipes fit for a princess.

The first recipe the girls wanted to make are these chocolate cupcakes with cutouts. I let them go wild in the kitchen and only supervised from the side lines.

Middle did the measuring, mixing and pouring while Little One prepared the muffin tins with cupcake liners.

I loved watching how they worked together, figuring out the next steps as they went along.

This is a trick I taught Middle — use a small gravy ladle to pour the batter into the lined muffin tin.

Ingredients:

1 package chocolate cake mix

1 container vanilla frosting

red and yellow food coloring

Directions:

Prepare the cupcakes according to the package directions. Bake and let cool completely.

While the cupcakes are cooling put the frosting into a mixing bowl and add red and yellow food coloring to make it orange. Follow directions on food coloring. (We made orange frosting because it was close to Halloween when the girls did their baking.)

Once the cupcakes are cooled completely cut off the tops carefully. Then cut any shape you like into the top, spread frosting on the cupcake and put the cutout top back on for a peek-a-boo effect.

The girls also made some mini cupcakes with the left over batter and frosting.

Tuesday's Quote

November 27, 2012

I realized today that I have not posted a quote or one of my quote pictures in quite a while. I had one of my photographs in mind for just this occasion and so this morning I went searching with Mr. Google to find a quote that would fit the bill. In the process I found many more quotes that I love and realized once again that my love for quotes knows no bounds!

So, without further ado… a quote and photograph for your viewing pleasure!

Enjoy! 🙂

Picture Perfect Weekly #30 {Thanksgiving Edition}

November 24, 2012

I love to share photos and I love Instagram. I was one happy little blogger when Instagram became available on Android devices. I jumped, no leaped, on that particular social media bandwagon and have developed a new love affair/addiction with it. Because of this love affair I have decided to start my very own weekly link up called… Picture Perfect Weekly!!!
I would love it if you would join me and share the treasures you captured with Instagram/phone camera/any other camera during the past week. I see a lot of fantastic, cute, funny and happy moments every day.

Share just one or many of your pictures and add a small description.

Just paste the badge into your post or sidebar and follow me… quick and simple. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and of course, Instagram!

I look forward to seeing your treasured moments!!!

Here are some of mine.

Our Thanksgiving table set by yours truly. I do enjoy setting a pretty table. I often wish I had fancier dishes or fancy cloth napkins with napkin rings but in the end it’s the family that sits around the table that matters, not what the food is served on!

Little One really, really enjoyed the turkey legs. She had both and one of the wings!!!

Our desserts — a pumpkin bundt cake made from a recipe by Eatpicks (Thanks, Kelly!) and my sister made the key lime pie.

We had plenty of leftovers, especially turkey. So I made two turkey pot pies.

We ate the turkey pot pie on our Christmas dishes. They come out the day after Thanksgiving every year and I love to use them. They make me smile and my heart happy!

And turkey soup. This one was a team effort… hubby started it and I finished it. It was great for dinner but can’t wait to try it for lunch tomorrow after sitting overnight!

Another thing we do the day/weekend after Thanksgiving is put out all our Christmas decorations (and our menorahs, as well). I always love this little area with the stockings and the two Christmas bears.

Ta da… our Christmas tree. We actually got an artificial, pre-lit tree this year. I do love getting a real tree but I hate the mess and having to water it. Also, I could never wait to let the branches fall properly before decorating. Middle did find these awesome little stick ornaments you can hide in the tree and they make it smell just like a real one… it really works! 🙂

Last but not least, a little hot chocolate treat with Pfeffernüße. Best enjoyed while sitting by the lit tree and listen to some Christmas tunes!

I added this shot of vultures flying over our neighborhood to make it ten so I can link up with Stasha for Monday Listicles!!! 🙂

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving day and weekend.

Follow Friday Four Fill in Fun… a little late!

November 24, 2012

I’m a little late to the party this week but wanted to make sure I do the hop since Hilary had to pull it last week and is back for some fill in fun this week!!!

After celebrating Thanksgiving with my sister and her family on Thursday and spending most of Friday getting into the holiday spirit by decorating, listening to Christmas music and drinking hot chocolate with the kids I can finally sit down and get some things taken care of.

Here goes.

Each week, Hilary plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on our own blogs. If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her at feelingbeachie@gmail.com. If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop! This week’s co-host is Pam from Trooppetrie – she came up with the last two statements!

Hilary would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

This week’s statements:
1. I put ___ on a hot dog
2. when it___ I ____
3. If my house____then I would be able to___
4. If I was getting married tomorrow I would _______________ differently so we could ________________differently now.

My answers:

1. I put chili and cheese on a hot dog. (That’s definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.)

2. When it rains I love to snuggle under my covers and listen to it until I fall asleep.

3. If my house had an extra bedroom than I would be able to set it up as an in home office/guest room.

4. If I was getting married tomorrow I would not do anything differently so we could not tell it differently now.

The Name Game

November 20, 2012

After much…

Talking.

Asking.

Arguing.

Considering.

I have decided to stick with BocaFrau.

I’d like to thank all of you for bearing with me while I was going through this “crisis”.

Thank you for your comments, thoughts, suggestions and support.

I’m sorry to disappoint you if you were waiting for the “big” reveal.

I did make a change though… see my new header. ↑ Up there.

Isn’t it pretty?

I’m working out some stuff in my mind and on paper for some other changes I want to make.

Not necessarily with the design. But with some added content.

All in good time.

For now, I bid you a good night and sweet dreams.

Picture Perfect Weekly #29 {Live, Love, Laugh edition}

November 17, 2012

I love to share photos and I love Instagram. I was one happy little blogger when Instagram became available on Android devices. Because of this love affair I have decided to start my very own weekly link up called… Picture Perfect Weekly!!!

I look forward to seeing your treasured moments!!!

Besides sharing my life in IG pictures this week, I’d like to take the chance and let you know how my search for a new blog identity is going. Some of you may have read this post from a few days ago where I was trying to explain why I feel the need for a new blog name.

After some more soul searching, bothering a few of my most trusted bloggy friends with one e-mail after another and basically annoying the crap out of hubby, I thought that I had found what I was looking for. I got some great advice, lovely comments and felt pretty good about where I was.

Leave it to hubby and his no-nonsense attitude to make me question my sanity and thought-process. I was back at square one… I let things simmer and didn’t do anything. Just went about my business — preparing for my sister’s arrival tomorrow, doing my chores and getting some blog reading and commenting done.

And then it happened… BOOM! I had an epiphany. Leave it to some great blog posts, even greater bloggy friends and some heartfelt comments and I had it. I got that tingly feeling in my tummy, like a thousand butterflies had invaded it, and felt like laughing out loud. Of course, it happened right when I had to leave to pick up the kids from school…

But I just couldn’t leave without letting hubby in on my epiphany. So, I told him… And without any muss or fuss, I had my new name. I promise, I will share it soon. The domain name is bought and paid for, the new header designed… and things are happening. I am just so excited and bursting at the seams with happiness right now.

I will let you in on my epiphany when I’m ready to unveil my new name!!! In hindsight it seems so easy now, so right for me and I feel it’s so who I am.

Thank you all for bearing with me and putting up with my crazy notions!!! Love you all! 🙂

This week was fairly quiet and calm for the most part. No appointments, no crazy running around for school-related activities and also not too many pics taken with IG.

On Tuesday’s the boy has robotics club after school so the girls and I usually have an hour to kill before we can get him and head home. There is no point in going home and coming back… We try to find different things to do. We either go to Target, Starbucks, or Aldi. This time Dunkin Donuts won out. It was nice.

My favorite necklace is the one in the picture above. It’s a motto I try to live by. What would life be after all if we didn’t live it, shared love and laughed often?

Yesterday, the vampires took over. I make no secret out of my love and slight obsession with all things Twilight and both my girl and I were so happy that this day had finally arrived and we would see the end to the saga. And what an ending it was. I cried, screamed, laughed and sighed and I can’t wait to go back and see it again!!! 🙂

As I write this, I am sitting outside on the patio enjoying the sunshine and breeze rustling through the trees. It is a beautiful day. I’m not rushing around like a mad woman trying to get things done for tomorrow. It’s not that I’m not doing that but I’m doing it at a more leisurely pace. It helps that I broke up my work and did a little each day. Tomorrow can’t arrive soon enough. I miss my little sister. It’ll be so good to see her and the family again.

The lake view is one I never tire off. I love our neighborhood and enjoy walking through it and by the numerous lakes. I feel lucky to be able to enjoy this daily.

And now I leave you with this video to one of my new favorite songs. It is just so sweet!!!

{Focus} on Mom Photo Challenge: November 2012

November 15, 2012

My friend Nicolette at Working on a Project hosts a fun monthly link up where MOM gets to be the star of the show. Here is what she has to say:

Every month I challenge myself and you to get out from behind the camera and step out in front of it. I ask you to think about capturing the simple everyday moments that years from now you and your family will treasure most regardless of what you were wearing or what kind of camera you were using. The link is open all month, so you have plenty of time to get that pretty face of yours in front of the camera 😉

In a nutshell:

  1. No fancy camera or editing needed.
  2. No prompt or topic, the only requirement is that you (Mom) be in the photo.
  3. Link up as many posts as you like throughout the month.
  4. Not a blogger? Join us on Instragram or Facebook
  5. Need more details? Check out this post.

I have to say that this is truly a challenge for me since I much prefer to be behind the camera than in front. I’m glad that Nicolette hosts this link up and encourages us mom’s to get out from behind the camera and get in front of it with and for our children. I made an effort the past few weeks to have me in the photos so I could link up with her and show you me…

Here I am behind and in front of the lens. We were on our way own to Key Largo and I was snapping away when I caught my reflection in the rear view mirror. I love my new camera! 🙂

Here I am with my littlest girl at the park. I took the girls to the park so that they could run around on the playground and let of some energy. I took lots of pictures of them and was able to capture a beautiful sunset as well. Middle turned the tables on me and took these. I love my girls.

Here I am in a for real Humvee at the Wings over Homestead airshow. What a great day we had there… clear blue skies, aerial acrobats and our military might all on display. For the second pic I made hubby get in the shot with me. That’s another  challenge… getting pictures of us! (Hmm, another link up in the works, maybe!!!)

And this last one. I took it all by myself… a successful self portrait, I’d say. I have such a hard time with that… I had just finished coloring my hair and getting ready for dinner out and thought I’d give it a shot. Et voila…

So there you have it. Me in every shot. Now to get working on new ones for the December link up!

Please, take some time out of your day, take a picture with you in it and link up with Nicolette!!!
