How is it February already?

February 13, 2018

Wow. How in the world is it February already? I meant to write a nice 2017 wrap up post and a nice welcome to the New Year post highlighting some of the things I’ve worked on over my Christmas break. As you can see, neither happened.

I did get a few blog related things accomplished, for one, I merged my old blog BocaFrau with this one, so all posts are in one place and if you try to access bocafrau.com it redirects you here. (Thanks, hubby!) I didn’t change too many things on the blog itself since I’m still pretty happy with the template etc. I just streamlined a few things for myself, in hopes of posting more regularly. You see how that’s going, right? I mean, this post has been sitting in my draft folder since December. Ooopsies. I also updated my about me page, as I usually do at the beginning of each year. Other than that I just changed the look a bit and updated the top menu.

I created a portfolio site with Adobe Portfolio  (not an advertisement) since it’s included with my Creative Cloud subscription. I wasn’t sure at first, if I wanted to set up another website but I’m happy that I did. I like the different layout options and it’s ease of use. You’ll find it if you click on the Photography link in the top menu. I’d love it if you could pop on over and let me know what you think.

One of the reasons this post/blog has been sitting neglected for so long is that hubby and the kids all battled the flu in January.  I was the only one spared and only had a very minor cold for a couple of days. The road to recovery took a while but now everyone seems to be back to (mostly) normal and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that no one will relapse and we all stay well. A tall order with all the germs flying around at work and school! If you or your family have been affected by the flu this year, I just want to say I’m sorry that you have to deal with it and I wish everyone a speedy recovery!

I did manage to read two amazing books over break. Fourty Autumns by Nina Willner is a book about a family and their lives in Germany during the Cold War. It highlights the story of the author’s family, her mother’s life in the West and the rest of the family in the East and what they endured being separated for 40 years. The book really resonated with me, as I grew up in East Germany. I only lived under communist rule for 10 years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and can only look back at that time through the eyes of a child. But there are parallels, my grandma’s sister lived in West-Germany and we were only able to communicate with her and her children, my mother’s cousins, through letters. I still remember the first time we went to visit them and how amazed I was by everything!

The second book I read is a much more somber one, When Breath becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. This book is a memoir about how the author, a neurosurgeon, is trying to come to terms with his mortality after he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. This book was on my radar for a while and after reading a post on Cup of Jo, who I’ve been following a while, I decided now is as good a time as any. I never realized the connection there and thought it was interesting how Joanna is Lucy’s twin sister and Lucy is Paul’s widow.  I didn’t regret reading the book and it certainly is a story that will stay with me.

I just started reading Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance and so far so good. I will let you know what I think once I’ve finished it. I need to do some research as I remember an article saying this wasn’t really a memoir or something along those lines. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? If you do, leave me a comment, please.

Other than that, things are moving right along, we are all busy with school and work and trying to eat and be healthier. I started walking more regularly and have also been dipping my toes into yoga. Thanks to Heather at heyyyheather.com I finally found a yogie on YouTube who I feel is easy to follow for a beginner, and who doesn’t make it feel intimidating. I enjoy my 30 minutes a few times a week and cannot wait to hop on the mat. If you feel like checking it out here’s the link to Yoga with Adriene on YouTube.

We are also planning a super-duper amazing trip and I can’t wait to share more about that. It’ll be a post for another day though. 🙂

I hope you enjoy the random photos that have nothing to do with this post. I took them when the girls and I went to visit my mom on the west coast. I wanted to go to the beach and see a sunset. The sunset was rather lackluster bit we still had a nice time.

xoxo, Susi

Love your recap and of course your photos. Your updated site looks awesome. Great job. I read When Breath Becomes Air as well and while it was not a book that you “enjoy” it was very good and gave me some good things to think about. Tell me more about what YouTube channel you are using for your yoga. I have been thinking about it as well…let me know! Thanks!

The yoga channel is Yoga with Adriene and if you search just in her channel, she has some basic beginner videos that are great! I’ve been really enjoying it and love setting aside time each evening. 🙂
