How is it February already?

February 13, 2018

Wow. How in the world is it February already? I meant to write a nice 2017 wrap up post and a nice welcome to the New Year post highlighting some of the things I’ve worked on over my Christmas break. As you can see, neither happened.

I did get a few blog related things accomplished, for one, I merged my old blog BocaFrau with this one, so all posts are in one place and if you try to access it redirects you here. (Thanks, hubby!) I didn’t change too many things on the blog itself since I’m still pretty happy with the template etc. I just streamlined a few things for myself, in hopes of posting more regularly. You see how that’s going, right? I mean, this post has been sitting in my draft folder since December. Ooopsies. I also updated my about me page, as I usually do at the beginning of each year. Other than that I just changed the look a bit and updated the top menu.

I created a portfolio site with Adobe Portfolio  (not an advertisement) since it’s included with my Creative Cloud subscription. I wasn’t sure at first, if I wanted to set up another website but I’m happy that I did. I like the different layout options and it’s ease of use. You’ll find it if you click on the Photography link in the top menu. I’d love it if you could pop on over and let me know what you think.

One of the reasons this post/blog has been sitting neglected for so long is that hubby and the kids all battled the flu in January.  I was the only one spared and only had a very minor cold for a couple of days. The road to recovery took a while but now everyone seems to be back to (mostly) normal and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that no one will relapse and we all stay well. A tall order with all the germs flying around at work and school! If you or your family have been affected by the flu this year, I just want to say I’m sorry that you have to deal with it and I wish everyone a speedy recovery!

I did manage to read two amazing books over break. Fourty Autumns by Nina Willner is a book about a family and their lives in Germany during the Cold War. It highlights the story of the author’s family, her mother’s life in the West and the rest of the family in the East and what they endured being separated for 40 years. The book really resonated with me, as I grew up in East Germany. I only lived under communist rule for 10 years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and can only look back at that time through the eyes of a child. But there are parallels, my grandma’s sister lived in West-Germany and we were only able to communicate with her and her children, my mother’s cousins, through letters. I still remember the first time we went to visit them and how amazed I was by everything!

The second book I read is a much more somber one, When Breath becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. This book is a memoir about how the author, a neurosurgeon, is trying to come to terms with his mortality after he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. This book was on my radar for a while and after reading a post on Cup of Jo, who I’ve been following a while, I decided now is as good a time as any. I never realized the connection there and thought it was interesting how Joanna is Lucy’s twin sister and Lucy is Paul’s widow.  I didn’t regret reading the book and it certainly is a story that will stay with me.

I just started reading Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance and so far so good. I will let you know what I think once I’ve finished it. I need to do some research as I remember an article saying this wasn’t really a memoir or something along those lines. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? If you do, leave me a comment, please.

Other than that, things are moving right along, we are all busy with school and work and trying to eat and be healthier. I started walking more regularly and have also been dipping my toes into yoga. Thanks to Heather at I finally found a yogie on YouTube who I feel is easy to follow for a beginner, and who doesn’t make it feel intimidating. I enjoy my 30 minutes a few times a week and cannot wait to hop on the mat. If you feel like checking it out here’s the link to Yoga with Adriene on YouTube.

We are also planning a super-duper amazing trip and I can’t wait to share more about that. It’ll be a post for another day though. 🙂

What’s new in your world? Let me know by leaving a comment below!

I hope you enjoy the random photos that have nothing to do with this post. I took them when the girls and I went to visit my mom on the west coast. I wanted to go to the beach and see a sunset. The sunset was rather lackluster bit we still had a nice time.

xoxo, Susi

Friday Fun with Feeling Beachie… (not just for the fill ins)

February 8, 2013

I’m tired. But it’s a good tired – a relaxed, lethargic kind of tired. We spent the last few days in some great company. The hostess with the mostest – Hilary of FeelingBeachie – and I had some fun in the sun.  Hilary and her husband Marc are down here visiting from New York and we got to spend some time with them. Middle was ecstatic to see her new best friend again and she couldn’t stop smiling when all of us had dinner together.

While the older two kids were in school hubby, little one and I snuck out for some more quality time and beach fun at the hotel Hilary and Marc stayed at.

Little One – four years old – took this picture of Hilary and I. Pretty good, right?

Hilary had to go into the water with my little girl because this Florida chick thinks its just too cold to go swimming right now! 🙂 And yes, I’m aware there is a snow storm happening as I write this in the North-East. What can I say, after going on 18 years in Florida my blood has thinned down from syrup to water.

This little buddy let me get real close to him. There were lots of seagulls around and they were pretty tame. It’s so much fun to watch them go about their business without a care in the world – walking in and out of the surf or soaring up in the bright, blue sky.

Hilary and I had some great conversations, bounced ideas of each other and talked BLOG! She can’t wait to get back home on her computer to answer all of your comments and visit you. While she enjoyed her much needed break from every day life and the work that still needs to be done after Hurricane Sandy – getting back to blogging is definitely on her mind.

And now, without further ado…

Follow Friday Four Fill in Fun

Each week, Hilary plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on our own blogs. If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her at Hilary(at)feelingbeachie(dot)com. If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop! This week’s co-host is Tami from Empty Nest in Il – she came up with the last two statements!

Hilary would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

This week’s statements:
1. When I am on the phone I have to ____
2. I have a ____
3. I started blogging to ________
4. My worst habit is _______

My answers:

1. When I am on the phone I have to walk around or do something else with myself – folding laundry, sweeping the floor, dusting – all come to mind!

2. I have a house full of screaming kids… and there is only one that’s extra. Why is it they sometimes have to do everything at the top of their lungs?

3. I started blogging to (basically) stop annoying my husband and find an outlet for myself – and boy, did I ever find an outlet and so much more.

4. My worst habit is talking too much and talking over people.

Do you have someone in your life that is easy to talk to? Someone you are comfortable and totally relaxed with?

A Birthday, An Anniversary and Some Fill In Fun

January 10, 2013

It’s been a busy week for me. I spent a good part of the first three days steam-cleaning all the carpets in the house, including the stairs. It’s nice and shiny and clean. I hope, it stays that way for a little while. It may be wishful thinking, with 3 children, a husband, 2 dogs and a cat running around on it. 🙂 I’ve been in cleaning/de-cluttering/freshening mode ever since the new year started and it seems our urge to rearrange the living room keeps snowballing and bringing up other things I want to get done. Yes, I’m doing my “Spring” cleaning in January — that’s what living in Florida does to you.

And just like I’m giving the house a once over for the year, it seems my blog home was due for a fresher cleaner look, as well. And while I was rearranging things here, a lot of fresh, new ideas came to me. I hope, to put them to fruition soon. Did you like my how to post from yesterday? Would you like to see more like it? Yay, nay… or maybe?

Today happens to be a very special day. It’s this guy’s birthday! ↓

hubs happy birthday 2013

And also the one year anniversary of yours truly becoming an American citizen. I can’t quite believe that it’s been a year. On the whole not much has changed in my day to day life because of it. I was able to vote for the first time last year and that one is a big deal to me as I saw a few elections come and go without being able to make my voice count. Well, no more of that now! Happy one year anniversary to me. 🙂

Ok, time to join Hilary for some Friday fun. Come on, you can too, it’s easy piecey!

Each week, Hilary plans on listing four statements with a blank for us to fill in on your own blogs. If you want to join the fun and come up with four fill in’s of your own, please email them to her at Hilary(at)feelingbeachie(dot)com. I really, really, REALLY can use statements…. If she uses them, she will add you as co-host to the hop! This week’s co-host is Leslie from Time out for Mom – she came up with the last statement!

Hilary would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

This week’s statements:
1. When I __ I ___
2. It is pretty funny that ____
3. It may be strange but ___
4. How ______ made me ______.

My answers:

1. When I eat sushi and drink (a little bit) of sake I turn into a very happy mommy.

2. It is pretty funny that I can’t seem to come up with a funny answer for this statement! Ha! 🙂

3. It may be strange but I much prefer a hot cup of Rooibus tea over a glass of wine.

4. How much I love watching “Downton Abbey” made me realize that I haven’t really liked watching any show since ER went off the air.

October 14, 2011

Hi everyone.

Welcome to my blog. Oh boy, just writing this makes my hands get sweaty and the butterflies in my tummy go into overdrive.

I’m a complete novice when it comes to blogging and the thought of me doing this seems very daunting. I figure, since I love, love to talk and tell stories about anything and everything( just ask my mom, I never shut up)…this would be a good outlet.

I started working on this blog after reading a bunch of books(for dummies, anyone?) about blogging and how to set one up. Thank heaven, for my techie husband without him I would have had the odd minor and, in one instance, major meltdown. Thanks to him, disaster was averted and after playing around with the design (which was lots of fun – thank you, WordPress) I started writing my first post.

It was just a first try to make the site look less empty. That post – Pumpkin Spice…and everything nice- was not so hard to write. The ones that followed ( and is going to be posted starting Monday) took a little more time and thought. And as much as I’m freaking out (inside my head) right now, I’m also very excited to share my story,my life and my thoughts.

Some of my posts will be about my upbringing in Germany, some about my life here in America, and some about my kids and family. A bit of everything…anything that catches my fancy, pretty much.

I hope, that you will find something that catches your interest and if not, thanks for stopping by and checking it out!!! I appreciate it.
