Happy Hearts Day!!!

February 13, 2013

A few months ago, I won a cookie decorating book from the lovely Alison at Writing, Wishing. The book has so many cute cookie ideas, recipes for different types of cookies, clear instructions about how to decorate them and also how to make royal icing. Being the baker that I am, I couldn’t wait to try out a recipe.

(This is an affiliate link. If you like baking as much as I do and buy this book, this shop gets a few pennies to stay afloat!)
With Valentines Day right around the corner, I decided to bake heart shaped cookies for middle daughter’s class instead of buying store bought cards and candies. Easy, piecey, right? Bake a few dozen cookies, throw on some icing and bag them with a cute card attached.

Well, not so fast. This little endeavor took me 4 days… yes, you read that right, 4 days of baking, decorating, bagging, tying up pretty bows. Throw in photographing, designing and printing a card and you have one tired mommy today. Part of the reason it took me so long is the fact that I had to take a little time here and there to get the work done.

AshValentineThis is the card I designed. I loved how the photograph came out with the silhouette and the sunset and Middle making a heart shape with her hands.  Thanks to PicMonkey this is what I came up with. Pretty cute, right? I do so love PicMonkey.

bakingheartcookiesMiddle was good about helping me every step of the way, a little here and a little there. Enough for her to be proud of what we accomplished. I baked the vanilla cookies Sunday night and we iced them the next day.

frostingcookiesHere we are in the middle of icing all the cookies. It was the first time that I used royal icing. I had to adjust the recipe a bit as I couldn’t find meringue powder at any of the stores we went to. It came out very well and we were happy with the results.

valentinechocolateheartcookiesThe day after we did the icing, I baked the chocolate cookies in the morning. The original recipe called for some Nutella to be added but I had to leave it out since one of the kids in Middle’s class has a nut allergy. I cannot wait to try it out with the Nutella. The kids and I love, love, love it. Even though I did not add it, the cookies still came out great and have a scrumptious chocolaty taste.

frostedchocoheartcookiesThat evening we frosted and decorated the chocolate cookie hearts. And also tried a few here and there. 🙂

frostedvanillaheartcookiesAfter making sure the icing was dried all the way-(I waited until the next day) – I used writing tubes of colored frosting to add each child’s initials to the vanilla cookies, again making sure that it was dried all the way so the cookies were safe for stacking.

valentinesThen, this morning it was time to bag all the goodies up which Little One helped me with by breaking the little twisty ties apart so I could secure each bag. In the afternoon, I picked up the printed cards. Middle and I tied them on with a cute little ribbon. And finally, we are all finished! I do hope that the children and teachers will like their valentines. If I hear one bad remark, I might just have to whip out my broom stick and go for a ride! (Just kidding.) 🙂
