A Magic(al) Hat

November 20, 2017

Ally is in third grade now. No more dressing up in costumes for her on Halloween (at school), instead, the kids have to design a hat that matches their word. They get to pick the word in advance with the teacher’s approval and then have to decorate their hat. The hats get worn for the Halloween parade and depending on what it is, the kids are also allowed to dress for their word. The other students/classmates have to guess the word that the hat depicts.

The kids actually have a lot of fun with it and this year I saw a lot of cool hats.

Ally’s word was magic, of course. 🙂 Nothing else would do for my little Harry Potter fanatic.

We decided to keep it simple and bought a plain black witches hat, some puffy gold paint and foam board stickers to cut out and decorate. Ally came up with the design and I helped her implement it a little. She’s very independent and likes to do everything herself. She used yellow foam board to make “scrolls” and wrote some spells on those. The brown foam board was made into a wand. She used the puffy paint to add some stars to the hat. It’s hard to tell in the pictures but the paint ended up drying a nice sparkly gold and stood out in a 3D effect.

She was so proud of her handy work. The kids ended up guessing anything in relation to Harry Potter, because they all know her obsession with the books and movies, but few came up with magic.

The cutest little wizard I did ever see!

Falling into Fall

October 1, 2012

After reading Stasha’s post I don’t feel quite so bad about being late to the party. It seems I’m not the only one who feels a time crunch lately. I’m going, going, going. Where? Not exactly sure.

Let’s continue and list ten things Fall.

Well, things that feel like Fall to me. In my little corner of the world Fall, or any other season besides Summer, doesn’t exactly happen. 🙂

Here is my list of 10 Fall faves:

1. Pumpkin Spice
K-cups  from Green Mountain coffee. I cannot wait for these to show up on the store shelves and have my first cup of the season. Yum!!!

2. Pumpkin Spice rooibus tea. Because I cannot get enough of Pumpkin Spice and this tea is caffeine free. Perfect for night time.

3. Baking – Pumpkin Spice cupcakes, anyone? Oh my, these are heavenly and the kitchen smelled just delicious while they were baking. I will add these to my Thanksgiving menu for sure. Recipe on Thursday!!!

4. Cooler mornings. Yes, it does cool down a little and most mornings and evenings it’s just gorgeous out. Enjoying those walks a lot more now.

5. Less humidity. We are not quite there, yet. But it’s coming and I will enjoy it tremendously. I never mind the heat of Summer but the humidity I can live without.

6. Baked chicken with German potato dumplings. Those heavier meals that we just don’t feel like eating during the hottest months of the year are making a comeback to our table.

7. Costumes. My kids still adore dressing up and buying the costumes for Halloween are just a part of fall.

8. Pictures of leaves changing. I miss that, watching the leaves change color, fall to the ground and walking through them. Crunch!!!

9. Halloween cups. They hide in the back of the cupboard most of the year and only come out around this time of year. Love them. 🙂

10. Pumpkins. Carving them, cleaning the seeds and roasting them. Salted, roasted Pumpkin seeds. Yes, please. 🙂

Thanks, Stasha for this great topic.

This week will be Fall themed here on my blog. Can you believe my 1 year blogaversary is coming up on Saturday?

I can’t. It seems just like yesterday when I opened my WordPress for Dummies book.

I’m thinking about a Fall themed, actually, a Pumpkin Spice flavored giveaway as a way to say “Thank you.” to all my friends and readers in my little space. What to you think?

Hope you all have a great week.

No Tricks, but lots of Treats!!!

November 1, 2011

This is my gang before Trick or Treating. Aren’t they just the cutest??? We had an Army Ranger (” I’m not just a soldier, mom!”), a Candy Corn Witch(not to be confused with a candy cane, duh!) and a Barbie Cheerleader (“Go team!”) this year. It was the first year my three-year-old could really understand and enjoy Halloween. I don’t think we’ve had this much fun in a while. As the kids get older they tend to race ahead and hang out with their friends instead of mom and dad. So, it definitely was a lot of fun going around the block with our Barbie Cheerleader. We also had another first, the first Halloween for my beautiful niece, she was a cute little pumpkin and after the first few houses, she fell fast asleep in the stroller and “enjoyed” a nice evening walk with her family!!! All in all, I’d say, we had a wonderful Halloween. The kids made out like bandits and couldn’t wait to show of their loot, which will soon be disappearing, slowly but surely…

Memories

October 29, 2011

I’ve been busy all day getting ready for my sister, brother-in-law and baby niece’s arrival tomorrow. I’m super excited because we haven’t seen each other in 3 years and I get to meet my niece for the first time. It’s funny, a friend of mine recently said that it’s amazing how much more you can get done when you know you are getting visitors!!! ( But that’s another story, entirely!)

After getting the grocery shopping out-of-the-way (which took a big chunk of time out of my morning), scrubbing the bathrooms and adding a few special touches. I decided to get all the little things out that I put aside for when my niece would be here. I saved some special bibs ( first Halloween, first Christmas etc.), blankets and baby towels. As I was doing that I remembered that I wanted to get the Halloween costume out that both my girls wore for their first Halloween and now will be my niece’s first Halloween costume!!! Even though all that stuff has sat in special boxes in the closets, it’s now tumbling away in the washing machine…I’m a little anal that way sometimes.

So, there I was sitting in my closet in front of the special “baby” box and I really just wanted to get the costume out but then it happened…the usual when the box opens…memories engulfed me. My girls happened to be with me and soon the ooohhhing and aaahhhing started. We pulled every single item of clothing out…the outfit my boy wore for our wedding ( yes, he was there when mommy and daddy said ” I do.”), the onsie middle daughter wore home from the hospital, the tiny shirt and hat the hospital provided for my youngest daughter…and many more. It’s amazing how these outfits bring back so many precious memories and looking at them I can’t believe how much my “babies” ( they hate being called that) have grown.

My boy will be 11 in a few short months, middle daughter is 8 (  going on 18) and our “baby” just turned 3. I’m just so glad, I decided to make a memory box and keep some of those special outfits and I’m hopeful that one day I can give these things to my children to use for their babies. But in the meantime I will share with my “baby” sister and look forward to seeing my niece wear the same Halloween costume her cousins have worn before her!!!

How many of you have memory boxes or special items you or your parents have saved? I know I’m not the only one who does this…or am I???

Pumpkin Spice… and everything nice!!!

October 7, 2011

Pumpkins

I still remember the first time I was offered a piece of pumpkin pie and since I was at my first official Thanksgiving dinner with an American family I took a slice. I needed a lot of whipped cream and coffee to get that thing down. I couldn’t believe people would eat something so “yucky” and different and enjoy it on top of that! It was definitely not part of the “normal” German diet I grew up with.

Who would have thought that years later I would come to love everything pumpkin spice flavored. The proof is there…the freezer is packed with pumpkin spice waffles which I enjoyed for breakfast,  the cabinet is filled with pumpkin spice tea which I enjoy a cup of nightly, our house is filled with the scents of pumpkin spice coming from the air fresheners scattered around and the special pumpkin spice coffee is already on the list. I will be buying some shortly since October has finally arrived and I cannot wait to enjoy my first cup!!!

Do you remember something that you never thought you would eat or drink and which you can’t live without now?
